AI Agentic Development

I'm a 30+ year veteran software engineer. The use of AI agents has changed my life... for the better and worse.

Let's get the worse out of the way, and then I'll list the better.

WORSE

  • I have to constantly correct the agent to do what I want it to. Sometimes it's because I was too vague, but sometimes it was because I was too specific.

  • Code quality is sometimes amazing, but often needs another pass.

  • I am putting trust in a black box instead of trusted people.

  • I spend more time managing agents than you do writing code (and for engineers, this is not fun).

BETTER

  • I develop at a 10-20x multiple, sometimes even faster, so you can get more done.

  • I am creating more than I have ever created, and it makes me insanely happy.

  • I can work on many projects at once.

I am overall in favor of AI agentic development, and you should be too, whether you are an experienced engineer or not. This allows you to build things that normally take 10-20 people. It's not without issue, but I can't imagine it any other way now.
